Forget waiting for a viral TikTok drop — this month Aldi turned its own checkout line into one. The discount grocery giant just tried something no budget supermarket has ever pulled off: a free, totally mystery “Blind Box” giveaway that borrowed straight from the collectible-toy and beauty-box playbook. And shoppers? They showed up in force. So much force, in fact, that the whole thing sold out in under a minute. Grab a snack (maybe from one of these grocery store secrets you probably didn’t know) and let’s get into it.
Wait, What Exactly Is an Aldi Blind Box?
If you’ve ever bought a mystery plushie or a surprise beauty bundle just for the thrill of not knowing what’s inside, you already get the appeal. Aldi took that “unboxing” energy and applied it to groceries with a four-day giveaway (June 22–25) that dropped a brand-new themed box every single day at noon ET: a Snack Blind Box for grazing fans, a Fiber Blind Box for the gut-health crowd, a Protein Blind Box for the gains-obsessed, and finally a Mystery Blind Box packed with a little bit of everything.
“The ALDI Blind Box taps into the excitement our fans already feel walking our aisles. Our shoppers come to ALDI for value, but they also come for discovery.”
— Bridget Kozlowski, Aldi Director of Communications
Each box was completely free, shipped straight to your door — you just had to be fast enough to snag one before they vanished. Which, spoiler alert, was the hard part.

Sold Out in Under 60 Seconds (And People Had Feelings)
Aldi promised “more than 100” boxes per day, which honestly should have been the first clue this was going to move fast. On day one, the Snack Blind Box vanished before most shoppers could even finish loading the page. Over on Reddit, the reactions came in hot: “Hit the claim link at 12:00 on the dot. Waited 8 minutes in queue and was told it had sold out,” one person wrote. Another added, “I waited 2 minutes and it was out.” Some fans even got stuck watching a “processing” screen for 30-plus minutes, only to find out the boxes were already long gone.
“100 boxes per drop, for 4 days? This sounds like a recipe for disaster.” — an Aldi shopper, predicting the chaos before it even started.
Say what you will about the scarcity — as far as marketing stunts go, this one absolutely worked. Aldi got exactly the kind of buzz you can’t buy with a coupon, all while tapping into a very real trend: shoppers are watching every dollar right now, and free groceries wrapped in a little mystery is catnip. It’s basically the grocery-aisle version of the treasure hunt you get from Aldi’s weekly new drops, just turned up to eleven.
Missed It? Here’s How to Not Get Shut Out Next Time
The official four-day giveaway has wrapped, but Aldi has already teased more surprise drops given how much attention this one got — so bookmark the Aldi Blind Box site and Aldi’s Instagram for the next announcement. A few tips if round two happens: set an alarm for the exact drop time (noon ET), have your shipping info saved and ready to autofill, and refresh right at the top of the minute instead of a few seconds early — some shoppers reported the queue system booted early clickers. And if you strike out again, our genius grocery shopping tricks can still shrink your bill without needing a lucky click.
Either way, this is officially a trend to watch. Blind boxes have already taken over toys and beauty — now that grocery has caught the bug, don’t be surprised if Costco or Trader Joe’s tries their own version next. We’ll be watching (and refreshing) so you don’t have to.
